rah rah rah
Sep. 17th, 2002 04:55 amOn September 11, Al Quaeda demonstrated a new type of warfare that farsighted thinkers had seen coming, but only theoretically, for a long time. You can go to war with the world's greatest power with no army, no country, no generals, and no weapons. By using our own industrial nfrastructure against us, you can inflict massive damage and pain, even change the very nature of the society.
Our current government has responded exactly as the terrorists would have wished. There's an adage that says, "If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail". Our leaders responded to this event the same way their fathers responded to Pearl Harbor, by finding a nation state to declare war on. The only tool our leaders know how to wield is the massive military attack, which we are very, very good at.
The Problem is, that approach works best when you have a target. Our new enemies have no head, and no body to strike. They exist everywhere, and they grow stronger with each elephantine blunder that our politicians and military make.
Having exhausted our options in Afghanistan, we can now do no more han hold that territory, at great cost. Now, the President has to look around to find another target that he has wield his hammer against, whether it has anything to do with the war or not. The fact that there are oil fields to be won makes it all the more attractive.
We can look forward to becoming an occupying power in the Middle East, proving to millions of potential new recruits that we are exactly what Osama Bin Laden says we are.
